Let the opportunities find you

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Phillipians 4:13

Do not apply for jobs. Do your work in such a way that those who need your skills will look for you.

I got my first job at the then Nile Bank (now acquired by Barclays Bank) without any hustle. I read a small book early in my career which opened my minds. The writer recommended focusing on few things at a time. This practice has helped me succeed in my career. While studying for the Association of Certified Chartered Accountant (ACCA), an international certification, I put in my whole. The ACCA exams were very tough then. However, I managed to complete the entire course in a record time of two years only. Majority take 3 or 6 years to complete.

For most sittings after every six months, I did four papers at once while many of my colleagues did two. I was so good that at one sitting I got an average score of 75% at ACCA level 2 international exams set in the UK, thereby emerging among the top candidates globally that year.

I tell you this not to brag. But it is true. My academic performance in ACCA exams was so good that other students would pay me to teach them. And whenever the lecturer delayed, I would stand in for him. This increased my confidence. And that is how luck struck. When one of the top executives at Nile Bank then wanted private discussions, I was called in. He invited me to meet him at his office.

He was so happy with my insights that he asked if I ever needed a job, I just inform. And the rest was for formality.

How are you positioning yourself to be discovered by folks who matter? There are always opportunities present. You need to identify them and tap into those opportunities.  For example, volunteer to be one of the key mobilizers for the upcoming event at your place of worship or church, So you will have the opportunity to interact with many great people. And if you do it well, they will offer you opportunities. Success in Jobs coming to you!
